Labiaplasty (labia reduction)

A labiaplasty corrects enlarged or asymmetrical labia. Discover techniques, recovery, results, and when this procedure may be indicated.

What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure in which the size or shape of the labia minora is adjusted.

In some women, the labia are significantly large, asymmetrical, or cause discomfort during daily activities. This can lead to irritation, friction during sports, or discomfort when wearing tight clothing.

In other cases, the concern is primarily aesthetic.

The goal of the procedure is to achieve a harmonious and natural shape of the vulva, while maintaining sensitivity and function.

INDICATIONS

When is a labiaplasty indicated?

01.

Enlarged or hypertrophic labia minora

A labiaplasty may be considered when the labia minora are significantly large and cause functional or aesthetic concerns.

02.

Asymmetry

Sometimes there is a clear difference between the two labia. A correction can help bring the shape into better balance.

03.

Irritation or friction

Enlarged labia can cause discomfort during sports, cycling, horse riding, wearing tight clothing, or daily activities.

04.

Aesthetic concern

Some women are bothered by the shape or visibility of the labia. A labiaplasty can then help create a more harmonious shape.

05.

Correction of surrounding structures

In some patients, the clitoral hood, the mons pubis, or asymmetry of surrounding tissues also play a role. This is always assessed individually during the consultation.

procedure

How is a labiaplasty performed?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, possibly with light sedation. The technique is tailored to the anatomy, the symptoms, and the patient’s expectations.

Safety

The choice of technique is always based on the individual anatomy, the shape of the labia, and the patient’s expectations.

With the trim technique, excess tissue along the edge of the labia is removed. With the wedge resection, a triangular piece of tissue is removed, preserving the natural edge of the labia as much as possible.

If necessary, a limited correction of surrounding structures, such as the clitoral hood, can also be performed to achieve a harmonious result.

Results

The result of a labiaplasty is a more harmonious shape of the labia.

Many patients experience less irritation, more comfort during daily activities, and increased self-confidence.

The goal always remains a natural result with preservation of function and sensitivity.

Aftercare

During the first few days, swelling, sensitivity, and slight bruising may occur.

These symptoms usually gradually subside within one to two weeks.

Sports and sexual activity are temporarily discouraged for several weeks to allow for optimal healing.

Recovery

Recovery after a labiaplasty

During the first few days, the following may occur:

  • swelling
  • sensitivity in the surgical area
  • slight bruising

These symptoms usually gradually subside within one to two weeks.

Sports and sexual activity are generally discouraged for several weeks.

Most patients can return home the same day.

scars

Scars after a labiaplasty

The scars are located in the natural folds of the vulva and are usually hardly noticeable after healing.

In a labiaplasty, incisions are placed so that they heal as discreetly as possible.

Due to the excellent blood supply in the intimate region, scars usually heal very well.

After full recovery, the scars are typically barely visible.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about labiaplasty answered

Will the scars remain visible?

The scars are located in the natural folds of the vulva and are usually hardly noticeable after healing.

Does the procedure affect sensitivity?

When the procedure is performed correctly, sensitivity in the intimate zone is generally preserved.

Can a labiaplasty be combined with other corrections?

Yes. In some cases, a limited correction of the clitoral hood or the mons pubis can be performed to achieve a more harmonious result.

Is a labiaplasty normal?

There is a wide natural variation in the shape, size, and asymmetry of the labia. Treatment is primarily considered when there is physical discomfort, irritation, or clear aesthetic concern.

When can I resume sports or sexual intercourse?

Sports and sexual activity are usually discouraged for several weeks. This will be discussed personally during the consultation and follow-up appointment.
