Lip lift

A lip lift can improve the shape and visibility of the upper lip by shortening the distance between the nose and the lip, without the use of fillers.

What is a lip lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip. This makes more of the upper lip visible and gives the lip a more youthful and better-defined appearance.

With aging, the distance between the nose and the upper lip can gradually increase. As a result, the upper lip appears thinner and becomes less visible when speaking or smiling.

A lip lift can improve the shape and visibility of the upper lip without the use of fillers.

INDICATIONS

When is a lip lift suitable?

01.

Long distance between nose and upper lip

A lip lift can be considered when the distance between the nose and the upper lip is relatively long, causing the upper lip to be less visible. With aging, the distance between the nose and the upper lip often increases. Consequently, the upper lip gradually loses visibility and definition.

02.

Low visibility of the upper lip

When the upper lip is barely visible while speaking or smiling, a lip lift can help show more of the red lip tissue.

03.

Aging of the mouth area

With age, the upper lip may appear thinner and the ratio between the nose and lip may change. A lip lift can help restore this balance.

04.

Permanent result without fillers

For patients desiring a permanent result without repeated filler treatments, a lip lift can be a suitable alternative.

procedure

How does a lip lift work?

During a lip lift, a small amount of skin is removed just below the nose, so that the upper lip is positioned slightly higher.

Safety

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. A narrow strip of skin is removed via a small incision under the nose. The skin is then closed so that the upper lip sits slightly higher.

The procedure usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and the patient can typically go home the same day.

Results

A lip lift subtly raises the upper lip, makes more of the upper lip visible, and shortens the distance between the nose and the lip. This makes the upper lip more prominent without the need for additional volume.

Aftercare

After the procedure, temporary swelling, slight bruising, and a feeling of tension in the upper lip may occur.

Most daily activities can usually be resumed after a few days to about one week. Intensive exertion is best avoided during the first few weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your questions about lip lift answered

What is the recovery like after a lip lift?

After the procedure, temporary swelling of the upper lip, slight bruising, and a feeling of tension may occur. Most patients resume their daily activities after a few days to about one week.

When are the sutures removed?

The sutures are usually removed after about one week.

Will there be a visible scar?

The incision is usually placed in the natural crease under the nose. In the first few weeks, the scar may still be somewhat red or visible, but it typically fades gradually.

Is the result of a lip lift permanent?

Yes. The effect of a lip lift is permanent because the distance between the nose and the upper lip is surgically shortened. Naturally, the normal aging process continues.

What is the difference between a lip lift and fillers?

Fillers add volume to the lip. A lip lift primarily changes the position and visibility of the upper lip by shortening the distance between the nose and the lip. In the case of a long upper lip, a lip lift can often look more natural than adding extra volume with fillers.

Which technique is used for a lip lift?

Usually, an incision is placed in the natural contour under the nose, also called the nasal base. Through this access, a narrow strip of skin is removed, after which the upper lip is subtly raised.

Can a lip lift be combined with other treatments?

Yes. A lip lift can be combined with other facial treatments such as a facelift, facial lipofilling, or skin rejuvenation treatments.

Is a lip lift suitable if I mainly want more volume?

Not always. A lip lift makes the upper lip more visible but does not add volume. When volume is the primary goal, fillers or lipofilling may sometimes be more appropriate.
