Inverted nipple
Correction of an inverted nipple or nipple retraction. Discover causes, degrees of nipple retraction, treatment, and recovery after nipple correction surgery.
What is an inverted nipple?
An inverted nipple, also known as nipple retraction, is a condition where the nipple is pulled inward instead of pointing outward.
This can be congenital or develop later in life. For some individuals, the nipple has always been inverted, while for others, it only occurs later.
An inverted nipple can be aesthetically bothersome and cause practical difficulties, such as with hygiene or breastfeeding.
When the nipple remains permanently retracted, surgical correction may be considered.
During a consultation, the cause will be examined and the most suitable treatment will be determined.

How is an inverted nipple correction performed?
During a consultation, we will determine together whether a correction of the inverted nipple is advisable and which technique best suits your situation.
Safety
An inverted nipple correction is usually a minor surgical procedure. During the operation, the tight bands of connective tissue under the nipple are released, allowing the nipple to protrude again. The nipple is then stabilized in its new position. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes.
Results
The goal of the procedure is to have the nipple point outward again and restore a more natural shape. The surgery can improve the shape of the nipple, enhance symmetry between both nipples, and reduce aesthetic concerns. The result is usually immediately visible after the procedure.
Aftercare
After the operation, slight swelling or sensitivity may occur around the nipple. This usually subsides within a few days. To avoid pressure on the nipple, a protective dressing is often applied. In many cases, it is also recommended not to wear a bra for approximately two weeks. Most patients can resume their normal activities quickly.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your questions about inverted nipple correction answered
Can an inverted nipple disappear on its own?
When the nipple has been inverted since puberty, it usually does not disappear spontaneously. Sometimes the nipple may temporarily protrude due to cold or stimulation, but permanent retraction often requires correction.
When should an inverted nipple be examined first?
When a nipple suddenly becomes newly inverted, medical examination is important to rule out other causes. Particularly a unilateral, new, or rapidly increasing nipple retraction should be checked first.
What degrees of nipple retraction exist?
With mild nipple retraction, the nipple can easily be pulled out and may sometimes stay that way temporarily. With moderate retraction, the nipple retracts more quickly. With severe retraction, the nipple remains permanently pulled inward, and correction is more difficult without surgical intervention.
How is the correction of an inverted nipple performed?
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. During the operation, the tight bands of connective tissue under the nipple are released so that the nipple can protrude again.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is usually well-tolerated under local anesthesia. After the surgery, slight sensitivity, swelling, or tension around the nipple may occur, but this usually subsides quickly.
What is the recovery like after an inverted nipple correction?
Recovery is usually short and smooth. To avoid pressure on the nipple, a protective dressing is often applied. It is also frequently recommended to temporarily avoid wearing a tight bra. Most patients can resume their normal activities quickly.
Are there scars after the procedure?
The incisions are usually small and located at the base of the nipple. As a result, the scars are generally discreet and barely visible. They typically fade further in the months following the procedure.
Can I still breastfeed after the procedure?
Depending on the technique used, breastfeeding can sometimes be preserved, but this cannot always be guaranteed. If breastfeeding is important for the future, this will be discussed in advance during the consultation.
Can the nipple retract again?
In some cases, partial retraction may occur. The likelihood of this depends on the severity of the original retraction and the technique used.
Can this be combined with other breast surgeries?
Yes. A correction of nipple retraction can sometimes be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift, breast augmentation, or correction of breast asymmetry.
